Ballarat A Box

Ballarat A Box was the youngest and largest of the 5 signal boxes in Ballarat. It was brought into service in 1910 when the yard layout was expanded. The signal box contained a 118 lever 'A pattern' tappet frame.

The levers were grouped in accordance with their function and location on the diagram. Red levers worked the signals, the blue levers the plungers, and the black levers the points.

The building was made out of Evengreen styrene clapboard and sheet, 3D printed windows,, staples (for the brackets supporting the verandah), and wire for the verandah posts. The corrugated iron is home made out of aluminium foil. It still needs interior details added plus all the rods, cables pulley wheels etc underneath the building but I 'll leave these as a future project.

The signal box remained in operation until 1992 when the track and signal arrangements through Ballarat were simplified. All signalling was then transferred to a new panel in Ballarat station. The signal box remains in place.

This is the last major building for the layout, but there are still many other smaller projects to do.
