Q / VFAA Flat Wagons

The Q class was a 50ft general purpose flat wagon of all steel construction, capable of carrying a load of 31tons. They were constructed in 3 batches between 1913 and 1926. They were originally fitted with plate frame bogies. In service Q wagons could be seen carrying logs, power poles, vehicles, steel rail and precast concrete beams. Nine were fitted with ride control bogies in 1963/64 and were recoded to QF for operation on fast freight trains. Twenty eight Q's survived long enough to be recorded to VFAA in 1979/80. Most were withdrawn from service by the mid 80's with some surviving into preservation.

The Q's were built following instructions on David Baillie's Modelling the Victorian Railways website.

92Q loaded with rail in the way and works siding at Ballarat North. The tie down links were formed from a necklace chain. The distinctive brake wheel fitted to the Q wagons was formed from a press stud. This Q lacks the large support beam that the stanchion sit on. Q101 also had this arrangement.

80Q in the yard at Ballarat North workshops. In service not all Q's had all 4 supports and stanchions fitted. Long term plans are to build a model of the Victorian Railways mobile display caravan and have it loaded on this wagon on its way to a country show.

89Q awaiting loading at the goods shed in Ballarat yard. This wagon is fitted with 40ton round lid bogies.
