Rail Strike over closure of Regional freight centres

T361 and T331 are shutdown in the maintenance shed at Ballarat East Locomotive Depot.

A strike by rail unions from midnight on the 4th December 1983 has resulted in an almost full house at Ballarat East Locomotive Depot and a congested Ballarat yard. The strike had been called by the rail unions in response to the Victorian government's plans to close 24 regional freight centres.

Present around the turntable are B65, B69, T386, W243, W250, Y152, Y151, T388, T401, with T361 and T331 in the maintenance shed.

S312 and X50 rest at the Ballarat East locomotive depot fuel point. These locomotives had been on block wheat train which had been halted at Ballarat as it wouldn't have reached its destination before midnight on Sunday 4th December 1983.

Within Ballarat's yard a number of grain trains were stabled. These trains had been halted at Ballarat as they wouldn't have reached there destination by midnight on the 4th December 1983.

With talks between the rail union's and the Victorian Government having failed, the strike action looks likely to continue for some time.

Y152, Y151, T388 and T401 are shutdown around the turntable at Ballarat East.

W250, W243 and T386 rest around the Ballarat East turntable.

B69 and B65 would have been rostered on the Monday morning commuter trains to Melbourne if the strike hadn't been called by the rail unions.
