Introduction of through running of X-930 on the Overland

X50-934 cross Doveton Street with Up Overland.

After trials with Alco 942 in August and October, through running of 930's commenced on the Overland in late November 1983. Australian Nationals 930s were rostered as second unit to 3rd series X class, usually in back to back formation.

My first encounter with an X-930 pairing on the Overland was on 27th November 1983, when X50 led 934 on Up Overland under the Armstrong Street Bridge and across Lydiard Street into Ballarat station.

Initially only single ended 930's (930 to 935) were permitted into Victoria, but by early 1984, further members of the class were approved.

X50-934 wait departure time of 0725 at Ballarat with the Up Overland. The Y class pilot will dock a set of wooden cars from the carriage shed after the Overland departs to form 0745 Ballarat - Melbourne pass.
