The railway workshops at Ballarat North are busy grain proofing GY's ahead of the forecast bumper grain harvest. The movement of the 1983/84 grain harvest to ports of Geelong and Portland is only a month away.
The drought of 1982/83 had been disastrous for the state's grain growers with only 350,000 tonnes harvested, the lowest grain crop in nearly 40 years. This resulted in many 4 wheeled grain wagons being surplus to requirements and temporarily stored. With the 1983/84 grain harvest forecast to be over 4 million tonnes, grain wagons that have been stored at various locations around the state are being returned to service which includes some wagons visiting the workshops for attention.
