16th October 1984 was bitterly cold with icy south westerly winds and the temperature in Ballarat only in single digits. The morning's 8109 Down Ballarat pass. arrived at Ballarat station with traces of snow on the nose and roof of B69, having encountered blizzard like conditions on the run 'up the straight' from Gordon to Warrenheip.
