Ballarat station observations 14th September 1984

 



The November 1984 issue of Newsrail included a list of train observations made 40 years ago at Ballarat station on evening of 14th September 1984 between 16 30 and 21 30.

Surprisingly I have the majority of the locomotives observed on this evening in my locomotive fleet. The only exceptions are X41, T395, T412, T379, T360 and B74. For these loco's I have substituted other members of the same class and the same livery. Below is a recreation of these observations.


At 16 34 T333 arrives light engine from Ballarat East Loco Depot and stops at the end of no.3 road adjacent to signal gantry near Lydiard Street



At 17 06 B83 rumbles through Ballarat station on a Down Dunolly Goods with a load of 45 GH's. The train pauses for a crew change at the western end of the station before departing at 17 10.


At 17 21 X40 crosses from the Down mainline to No.1 road on the Up Dimboola pass. After a stop of 4 minutes X40 departs at 17 25.



At 17 56 C510 arrives at Ballarat on an Up Jet with 24 wagons

At 18 00 S313 arrives at Ballarat on the 8121 pass after an express run via North Geelong

S313 uncouples from the carriages, pulls forward over Lydiard Street and then reverses down the No.2 road. 

S313 runs to Ballarat East Locomotive Depot to be turned on the turntable, before running back to Ballarat station.





At 18 34 T388 runs through No.2 Road and then sets back onto T333 on a Down Ballast in No.3 Road.




At 18 49 C507 on the 9133 Adelaide - Melbourne Express Goods rolls through Ballarat station via No.4 Road, The train will be held at the signal gantry at the eastern end of the station before following S313 once it has cleared the section Ballarat East to Warrenheip.



At 18 50 S313 departs Ballarat for Spencer Street on the 8150 Up pass. 

At 18 52 T388-T333 depart on the Down Windermere Ballast. The train consists of 9xVHWA with a guards van at each end. The hoppers will be loaded with ballast at Windermere before running to Box Bank Loop to discharge.

At 19 19 a filthy Y153 arrives light engine stopping at the signal gantry at the end of the no.3 road

At 19 32 yard pilot Y151 shunts the loading for Ararat Roadside Goods onto Y153



At 19 41 B69 arrives at Ballarat station on the 8135 Down Ballarat pass.

At 19 47, Y153 departs on the 383 Down Ararat Roadside Goods. The train only consists of 3 wagons, a VOCX and 2 x VLCX. 


At 19 47 B69 uncouples from the carriages and pulls forward over Lydiard Street.


B69 runs via the No.2 road to Ballarat East Locomotive Depot.

B69 is stabled overnight off the turntable at Ballarat East Loco 


At 20 08 S308 arrives at Ballarat station on the 8133 Down Dimboola pass. Consist is an N set and 2 D vans. After a 2 minute stop S308 accelerates out of the station and disappears beneath the Armstrong St Bridge.



At 20 15 T401-T381 arrive via the no.4 road on an Up Maryborough Goods. The train consists entirely of KMQ's loaded with shipping containers and loaded GY's.




At 20 27 T401-T381 leave the wagons in the no.4 road and run light engine to Ballarat East Locomotive Depot for servicing


Yard pilot Y151 couples onto the wagons and pulls them into Ballarat yard.



20 32 S310 arrives via no.1 road on a Down Dunolly Goods consisting of empty GH's

Two minutes later T386 arrives on a Up Mildura Goods with a consist of VLCX-15GY-ZF. 


T386 runs via No.2 road and grinds to a halt adjacent to the ZLP on the rear of S310's train. The crews will change over for the run back towards there home depot. 


With the crew change complete T386 departs Ballarat, crossing over to the Up line in Ballarat yard.



S310 accelerates up the grade out of Ballarat station on the Down Dunolly Goods. 


At 21 43 B74 arrives at Ballarat on the 8145 Down Ballarat pass. B74 will run around the N set svia the no.2 road, couple to the cars and shunt them into the carriage shed. B74 will then run to Ballarat East Loco to stable overnight
