On Tuesday 25th September Y152 was rostered on the afternoon Redan Pilot (83). This pilot is scheduled to depart at 13 30 and can shunt sidings on the outward journey to Redan. Todays load consists of 4 GYs with barley for Elliot Magill Maltsters at Redan.
Y152 arrives at Ballarat Cattleyards at 13 50. The loco will use the loop here to run around the wagons before proceeding down the branch to Elliot Magill Maltsters. This makes shunting at the mill sidings easier.
Y152 pushes the 4 GY's down the line to the mill. Y152 pushes the 4 loaded GY's onto a rake of 4 empty wagons in the siding with the discharge pit.
Y152 then pulls these empties out of the siding and places them on the line that continues through to the Guncotton complex. The loaded wagons are then pushed over the discharge pit and uncoupled from the loco.
Y152 then retrieves the empties and then proceeds back along the branch towards the cattleyards. Once clear of the points for the Ampol (Alba) siding, the loco stops the points are thrown, the gates are opened and it then reverses into the siding to collect a single VTQY.
With all pick-ups now complete, Y152 returns along the branch to the cattleyards, pausing at the cattleyard sidings for safety working procedures, before running back to Ballarat.
Generally the run along the branch takes 10 minutes from Linton Junction (Ballarat D Box) to the cattle yards, although when a W class is rostered and the loading is heavy, the loco can struggle along at walking pace taking upwards of 25 minutes to reach Linton Junction.
Y152 did actually run the Redan pilot with 4 GY's on the 25th September 1984, recorded by Frank Strik in the December 1984 issue of Newsrail.
