Unusual sighting occurred on the afternoon of Thursday 30th August 1984, when S312 was seen running light engine from Maryborough towards Ballarat. S312 was later seen in the Ballarat North Railway Workshops, keeping workshops pilot W247 company.

T412-S312 had been working an empty block grain of VHGY's, when the coupler on the rear of S312 broke near Litchfield. S312 and T412 worked back to St Arnaud where the S class was turned, before returning solo to Ballarat to have the draw gear repaired. Its very unusual for mainline locomotives to visit Ballarat North Railway Workshops.
