Late in the 'New Deal for Country Passengers' upgrade program, two S cars were refurbished and released to traffic as AS cars. All S cars refurbished earlier had been converted to either BS or BRS economy cars.

AS206 refurbishment nears completion at Ballarat North Railway Workshops. |
Originally 8AS, AS206 refurbishment is nearing completion and will be released from Ballarat North Railway Workshops in a couple of days.
This car was constructed in a time of austerity during World War II, with the internal walls and partitions painted instead of panels with polished wood veneer, as used in earlier S cars.
When released to traffic in July 1984, AS206 was placed in the unique set of cars in run 26, with consist of CD-AS-BRS-BS-BEa/c used on the Warnambool line.

15AS has just been delivered to the workshops by the midday workshops pilot and will be refurbished over the coming months, taking AS206 place on shop floor, before being renumbered and released as 210AS later in the year.

These refurbished cars didn't maintain their new identities for long, once further AZ cars had been converted and released as ACZ. AS206 was converted to an economy car BS206 in October 1985 while AS210 was recoded as a BS car in September 1985.
