On Saturday 31st March 1984, the 9121 Adelaide - Melbourne Express Goods had the unusual lashup of three C class, with C501 leading C507 and C510 elephant style. Its unusual to capture almost a third of the class rostered on the one train, particularly with a number of the class out of action in the workshops having cracks in their underframes repaired. (The cracks in the welds between the body bolsters and the trunnions which sit on the bogie centreplates had been discovered in July 1983. It took a number of months for all of the C class to have the frames repaired).
Bringing up the rear of the train were two 8300 guards vans, one in white and the other in the Australian National "lemon twist" scheme. Often the Saturday and Sunday 'Jets' were used for balancing purposes, positioning locomotives and guards vans for weekday services.
