For Christmas, the VRI Hall at Ballarat operated a special to Ararat with festive celebrations held at Green Hill Lake on Sunday 18th December1983. For the train, a spare set of W cars consisting of CW-AW-BW-BW-BW was worked to Ballarat empty on Saturday attached to regular Ballarat pass. For the occasion T321 was washed by the staff at Ballarat East Locomotive Depot.
