A point that serves the goods shed at Ballarat has been providing trouble recently. First the point blade broke, which was repaired then it stopped providing electrical current beyond the frog. I decided it was easier to remove and replace rather than attempt to fix it again.
This was achieved by first wetting the ballast to assist with breaking the glue bond. A Dremil was used to cut the track joiners at each end. A chisel was then used to gently prise the track from the baseboard. The ballast was removed and dried, then sleeved so that it could be reused with the new point.
The replacement section of track had been painted, the side of the rails a rusty colour and the sleepers a dirty grey colour. It was secured in position with track pins then the ballast was pushed between the sleepers with a small brush. The ballast was secured in place with diluted PVA glue.
With the point replaced the centre track into the goods shed can again be used.
