Passenger carriage fleet - BCE-AS-BE(a/c)-BWL (run 25)

B65 glides down Warrenheip bank on the 8115 Melbourne - Ballarat pass.

By April 1983 there were only two sets remaining with the traditional pairing of AS-BE(a/c). Both these sets were operating with a consist of BCE-AS-BE(a/c)-BWL(or BE) and were used on Kyneton services and 8115/8142 Ballarat pass. At the time these were the only Monday-Friday services to and from Ballarat formed by wooden cars.

A B on the 8115 Down Ballarat pass at Melton (scheduled at 1:05pm) on 8th April 1983. Loco and carriages not recorded but the consist is BWL-BE(a/c)-AS-BCE. At the time this was the only Monday-Friday service to Ballarat formed by wooden cars. On the 31st March 3BCE-1AS-50BES-75BW had formed this service so its possible that the same set was used on this day.

At 5.24pm T396 on Down Kyneton pass, runs through West Footscray. Consist is 56BE(S)-50BE(a/c)-6AS-3BCE. These same cars would have formed the midday 8115/8142 Ballarat pass. T396 had a different application than other T's of the yellow on the short hood where it met the headlight.

On Black Thursday 31st March 1983 the consist of the two sets were:

3BCE-1AS-50BES(a/c)-75BWL
4BCE-4AS-22BE-55BES

3BCE-1AS-50BES(a/c)-75BWL
this set ran 1230 service to Ballarat behind B65, then on the 1705 Kyneton service behind B78.

4BCE-4AS-22BE-55BES
At Easter this set was operating with a BE replacing BE(a/c), and a BE instead of BWL as car D. The set was used on the 1745 Kyneton service behind T342.

75 BWL is modified from Steam Era Models BW kit with an additional BW side and two Ian Lindsay Model semi eliptical roofs joined together.

The BCE is a kitbashed out of Steam Era Models BW kit, with an additional roof. The guards/luggage end is made out of styrene car siding and plain sheet. The AS is from Powerline, BE(a/c) is scratchbuilt sides with Steam Era Models underframe, roof and ends, and the BWL is modified from Steam Era Models BW kit with an additional BW side and two Ian Lindsay Model semi eliptical roofs joined together.

3BCE is a kitbashed out of Steam Era Models BW kit, with an additional roof. The guards/luggage end is made out of styrene car siding and plain sheet.

On the layout this set is used each weekday for the 8115 and 8142 Ballarat pass. When I operate the spring 1982 timetable (with roster N10) the set is also used on 8133 and 8130 Dimboola pass. The set was replaced on the Dimboola services when Roster N12 commenced on the 20th December 1982. Roster N12 introduced N sets on all trains west of Ballarat. Most Ballarat trains were also formed by N sets except for the midday 8115 (Down) / 8142 (Up) pass and the Friday evening 8145 (Down) pass. Occasionally a spare set of wooden cars would be substituted on a Ballarat service if the rostered N set was unavailable.

B65 awaits departure time at Ballarat with the 8142 Ballarat - Melbourne pass.
