Passenger carriage fleet - (Run 33, 34 and 35) CW-AE-BW-BW

The passenger car fleet on my Ballarat layout is based on sets that were operating and carriages that still in service around Easter 1983. As this is 40 years ago I though I would share the make-up of these sets over the next few days.

In roster N12 there were 3 sets of CW-AE-BW-BW (runs 33, 34,35) mostly used for Kyneton services.

17CW is scratchbuilt (layers of styrene  sheet to form the sides and ends) with a Ian Lindsay Model semi eliptical roof and Steam Era Models bogies and other detail parts.

On Black Thursday 31/03/1983 one of these sets consisted of 17CW-40AW-38BW-8BW. This set formed the 1635 Down Kyneton service behind T351,  returning from Kyneton to Spencer Street at 2005 and was shunted to platform 7 to form the 0700 Geelong service the next morning (Good Friday).

40AW is a modified Steam Era Models kit fitted with a Ian Lindsay Model semi eliptical roof.

8BW is a standard Steam Era Models kit assembled following the instructions.

Carriage roster N12 commenced in December 1982 corresponding with the delivery of the 12th N set, with 10 of these sets programmed each day. This roster was still in place at the end of March 1983, even though another 2 N sets had been delivered. These additional N sets were used to form extras and replace non air-conditioned sets until the new roster N15 commenced on 30th April 1983. In addition, there were still a couple of spare wooden sets made up of two of three BW and/or BE cars, with a AE or AW and CW van. These were mostly used as railmotor replacements or when a set didn't get back to Melbourne in time for its next scheduled service. With the significant reduction in the size of the wooden passenger car fleet some of the spare sets had AE and AW's being used as economy cars.

On the layout this set is used to replace failed N sets on Ballarat services or when the scheduled set didn't get back to Melbourne in time for its next scheduled service. Its also used for specials (with additional cars added) such as for the Stawell Gift on Easter Monday, or the Royal Melbourne Show or for wildflowers at Grampians in September.
