During the early 1980's both Australian National and the Victorian Railways were short of container wagons. This resulted in many open wagons including older wooden bodied wagons such as the AOWY being used to carry shipping containers on interstate express goods.
In addition to the two grey AOWY's, I scratchbuilt another 2 that I have painted in Australian National green and gold colours. To paint these I used meadow green spray paint. I haven't used this paint before so didn't know how closely it would match Australian National green, but I'm quite happy with the results particularly when its compared to the green on Trainorama 934.
AOWY 83P has been weathered to represent about a year grime since its repainting into the new corporate colours.
AOWY 13 has only a light weathering on the bogies and underframe, representing a wagon recently released from the workshops.
I used Norm Bray's Flickr photos for reference. There was quite a bit of variation in where the wagon code and number was placed on the yellow panel and I have tried to reflect this in these two wagons. I also still need to add the S boards when I buy them.
Both wagons have entered service, AOWY 83P has left Ballarat behind Y152 on the 391 goods to Pittong, for loading with Kaolin. AOWY13 was attached to the front on 9121 Melbourne- Adelaide Express Goods behind C510 and S305.
