Transition on the Vinelander

During 1983 the Vinelander went through many changes. Refurbished orange steel cars began to appear, blue CE vans were replaced by CD vans hired from Australian National and orange 33CE was regularly used. By years end some of the consist was in V/Line colours.

The Motorail wagon carries two cars on its top deck, a Holden Commodore and VW Beetle. This wagon was scratchbuilt back in the 1980's.

In the Working Timetable the Vinelander was formed by runs 27 and 28. The standard consist of the train was CE-AZ-MRS(or MBS)-BZ-BS + sleepers, with 1 or 2 VMAY Motorail wagons and a louvre van (either a VBPY or VLPY) for parcels. The Vinelander was usually hauled by a B or X,  X-T or B-T but occasionally a solo T class would be rostered

A Vinelander Sleeper repainted in V/Line colours. A metal sheet had to be placed over the stainless steel fluting for the V/Line logo.

By November 1983, the Vinelander had become multi coloured, with VR, tea-cup or V/Line locomotives leading a consist with a mix of blue and orange steel cars. Tonight recently outshopped X32 leads the Vinelander past Ballarat C Box and onto the Maryborough line. The train consists of 2 sleepers (one in V/Line colours), a combination of orange and blue sitting cars with a maroon and silver CD van bringing up the rear.

Today's train includes a combination of blue and orange sleepers and a refurbished 12BS.

On the layout with a spring 83 timetable, I run the Vinelander part way through the transition to orange, with one or two orange steel cars, a combination of blue and orange sleepers with orange 33CE or a CD as the guards van.

Hired Australian National guards van CD7 brings up the rear of a Mildura bound Vinelander. The van is BGB model.
