Introduction of through running of 930's on the Overland

X50-934 lead the Overland past Ballarat C Box with the Up Overland.

After trials with 942 in August and October, through running of 930's commenced on the Overland in late November 1983.

Australian Nationals 930s were rostered as second unit to 3rd series X class on the Overland, usually in back to back formation. Initially only single ended 930's (930 to 935) were permitted into Victoria, but by early 1984, further members of the class were approved.

A 930 rumbles past staff buildings and across Lydiard Street on the Up Overland. Although the Motorail wagon is attached there isn't any cars on the Overland today.

Early sightings on Alco's in Victoria were:
24/11/1983 - X48-932 Up Overland
27/11/1983 - X50-934 Up Overland
28/11/1983 - X48-932 Up Overland
19/12/1983 - X47-931 Down Overland
26/12/1983 - X52-931 Up Overland
27/12/1983 - X50-933 Down Overland

The 930 class became popular with some crews due to their comfortable ride and as their cabs were quieter than most GM units, crews were able to have a conversation without resorting to shouting. The 930's also had a reputation for good lugging capabilities at low speed.

X50-934 wait departure time of 0725 at Ballarat with the Up Overland. B68 will dock a set of wooden cars from the carriage shed after the Overland departs to form 0745 Ballarat - Melbourne pass.

In early 1984 the 930's were approved for through working on interstate express goods and began to appear with C, X and S classes on goods trains on the Western line.
