A modern version of the E open wagon, the early plain sided ELX open wagons were placed in service between 1961 and 1964. Built at Newport and Ballarat North workshops they were 3 ft longer than the E open wagons and had of capacity of 50 tonnes. Numbered 1 - 65 and 69 - 71, they were recoded to VOBX in 1979.
There was variation in the side bracing between the wagons built at Newport and at Ballarat North. VOBX 38 is one of the Newport built wagons, (I chose it as it was outshopped 60 years ago on 26/9, the day that I measured and cut out the sides). These are built using the same technique as the VOAA and heavy duty side VOBX, 30 thou sheet for the sides, 10thou for the doors and 60thou for the floor. channel or L angle is used for the side bracing. Chain links are from a necklace, and pins are used for the tie downs. Steam Era Model Bogies and brake components finish the model.
