Harris Bogie Transport Wagon

E64 rests out the front of Ballarat North Railway workshops.

Late in their life many E open wagons were converted for departmental use. In 1980 E64, had its doors removed and frame of L angle welded to the floor for the transport of Harris car bogies between Ballarat North and Jolimont Workshops.

E64 was built at Newport Workshops in August 1927. In 1941 during World War Two it was converted to an S flat wagon by having its ends and sides removed. In 1948 it was converted back to an E wagon. In 1958 it received new HY body and ends. In about 1980 it was had its doors removed and was converted for Harris bogie transport. It retained its E wagon code until 1983 when it was renumbered to HR114. In 1985 it was recoded to VZMA94.

This was made out of 2 GY ends left over from building another E wagon out of 2 Steam Era Models GY kits. The floor is 30 thou styrene sheet, sides are 20 thou sheet, with 1.5mm L angle used for the frame to hold the bogies and for side bracing. The heads of pins and necklace chain are used for the tie down points.

I didn't have decals that suitable for the workshops and Harris bogie transport stencil, so made do with one for transport between Ballarat Workshops and North Melbourne.I have 3 more E wagons converted for workshops traffic under construction which I hope to complete while on leave over the next 2 weeks.
