Y111 has been part of my loco fleet dating back to the early 1990's but has been missing a key feature of class, the shunting rail and bolsters below the running board. While scratchbuilding additional Y class for the fleet I decided to add this feature to Y111 to bring its detail up to the standard of my other scratchbuilt Y's.

Y111 was built for one of my previous layouts that was loosely based on Wangaratta with the branchline to Bright. This layout was set in a slightly earlier time period, focussed on 1982, when 3rd series X class started through running into NSW and the 422's and 421's began operating into Victoria. The gauge also had 2 GM's on hire from Australian National together with S317 (prior to its collision with the rear of the Spirit of Progress). At this time Y111 was one of the Y classes on the standard gauge, I remember watching GM33 and Y111 struggling up the grade at Kilmore East with a long interstate goods, with smoke billowing from it like it was an Alco. Y111 returned to the 5ft 3in, in 1983.
The shunters rail is made out of strips styrene 20thou sheet, with the bolsters 40thou sheet filed to the appropriate profile. I can't recall the paint that I used to originally paint the Y, so used Humbrol Matt 104 (blue). To hide any difference from the main body colour I lightly weathered the running board.
