During weekdays Ballarat had a number pilots to serviced the industrial sidings scattered around the city. The first each morning was no.67 Redan pilot, here Y170 leads no.67, with a single box van for one of the industries at munitions/freezer sidings.
Y170 arrives at Elliot Magill Maltsters at Redan. The Y will push the box van into the Munitions/freezer sidings for unloading.
Having placed the box van for unloading, Y170 pulls forward to Elliot Magill Maltsters with 3 flat wagons loaded with shipping containers. As there isn't a loop at Redan the Y will push the wagons back across Latrobe Street and will then pull forward into the cattleyards sidings to runaround the wagons.
The Y pushes the flat wagons back towards Ballarat to clear the points to the cattleyards. The Y then runs forward towards the Gillies Street gates, the wagons are uncoupled and the Y uses the loop to runaround the train.
The Y couples up the flat wagons. Once safety working procedures are complete, Y170 departs for Ballarat with the no.72 Redan = Ballarat pilot.
Y170 crosses MacArthur Street with the No.72 Redan=Ballarat pilot on its way back to Ballarat.
Once back at Ballarat yard, Y170 shunts the flat wagons into the no.9 road. They will form part of the load on the 9174 Ballarat = Melbourne through goods that evening. In the background Y150 has finished shunting lourve vans into the goods shed for unloading and is now making up a goods to Skipton.
