Specials for the 125th Royal Melbourne Show continued to run daily between Ballarat and Melbourne. With the set of PL cars used on the weekend being required for daily commuter traffic from Bacchus Marsh, one of the spare commuter sets was worked to Ballarat to provide the service.
Carriage roster N18 had commenced in August 1983 corresponding with the delivery of the 18th N set, with 15 of these sets programmed each day. There were still a couple of spare sets made up of two of three BW and/or BE cars, with a AE or AW and CW van. These were mostly used as railmotor replacements or when a set didn't get back to Melbourne in time for its next scheduled service. With the significant reduction in the size of the wooden passenger car fleet some of the spare sets had AE and AW's being used as economy cars.
B72 hauled the empty cars to Ballarat on 19th September 1983 and then ran around the cars to form the special back to Melbourne. Consist is 17CW - 40AW - 32BW - 8BW - 40BW.
