Over the last week I've been adding some of the trackside details adjacent to Ballarat East Signal Box and around the two dead end sidings at the eastern end of Ballarat yard. Situated between the two dead end sidings and the goods arrival and departure sidings was signalling conduit, power pole and shed (which I assume housed signalling infrastructure).
The conduit is made out of card of different thicknesses that has been painted silver. I use card because its inexpensive and is able to be bent easily over undulating terrain. It also bounces back if knocked when cleaning the track.
I also added the buffers lying on the ground, perhaps displaced in a shunting accident. They appear in this position in a photo on Mark Bau Victorian Railways website and were still in the same place in photos I took in the 1990's so were probably never put back in the ground.
I also built the shed housing the signalling equipment adjacent to the conduit. The corrugated iron is home made from thick aluminium foil which is scribed with a tool purchased from Brunel Hobbies. This is glued onto a cardboard frame of the shed. Behind the signal box was a small equipment shed. This was built using the same technique as the signalling equipment shed.
I still need to add a few details and weather the buildings once the paint has dried. The other trackside detail I want to add is the box that I think held the track feeds (see photos). Does anyone know there dimensions and the type of post that they were mounted on? I found these plans on Mark Bau's Victorian Railways website but I don't know what type they are. Is the post for these boxes old rail or is it [ shaped?
