The Lydiard Street railway gates have been in the news recently with the community backlash to the proposed temporary boom gates. On the layout the iconic gates have been missing which wasn't really noticeable until last year when I had to work at home with COVID-19 restrictions. The view of Lydiard St crossing was blocked by drill press on the desk. But when I cleared the desk for my workspace, I was looking directly at this missing feature most days.
The gates are made out of 20, 40 and 60 thou styrene sheet, with brass and florist wire. I used styrene sheet with rivets cut into thin strips for the brackets and bracing. The supporting posts are bamboo skewers over which styrene tube of different diameter/thicknesses has been placed. The ornamental cap and details are kids jewellery pieces that were in the scrap box. The adjoining picket fence is from Ratio. They were spray painted white and then weathered with powders.
Lydiard Street gates are closed as T388 arrives at Ballarat with a load of grain from the Skipton silos. |
To give the scene depth I really need to produce a photo backdrop of the buildings in Ararat St and Lydiard St. Unfortunately the layout is a narrow shelve at this point below a window so it doesn't give much space to have a backdrop. Next project is to construct the signal gantry at the west end of the station platform which will complete all the major features of around Lydiard Street.
