Way and works siding

Adjacent to Ballarat C Signal Box were the way and works sidings utilised for the storage of ancient wagons used in Departmental service. You could often see HD, HR and QR wagons stored in the sidings together with a collection W and WW workmen sleepers (known affectionately as bug huts).

The sidings are rarely used in operating sessions although this week whilst running a weekday timetable a plant train was scheduled to run to Trawalla for relaying the goods shed loop. Y152 was rostered to work the train which departed Ballarat yard at 0920 with 2 VOWA open wagons loaded with red gum sleepers carded from Gunbower.

Y152 crosses Doveton Street on its way to the Way and Works siding with 2 x VOWA open wagons and ZL guards van.

Y152 stops on the mainline adjacent to the depot sidings. The ZL is uncoupled and the locomotive pulls forward with the 2 VOWAs.

The points are switched and the Y reverses into the siding with the 2 VOWAs.

The VOWAs are coupled to a Q flat wagon loaded with recycled rail.

Y152 pulls forward onto the mainline with the VOWAs and Q flat wagon.

The points are switched, and Y152 reverses back onto the guards van.

Whilst performing brake test the plant train is passed by the Up Dimboola pass.

Y152 departs for Trawalla running past a rake of stored Bug Huts.
