Adjacent to the down mainline between Lydiard Street and Armstrong St Bridge there were a series of posts with triangular board fitted with large numbers painted in black. I'm not sure of the exact purpose of these numbered posts but as they are consecutively numbered from Lydiard Street end its assumed that they were to indicate to the driver of the Up Overland as to when the end of the train was adjacent to the platform.
The posts were made from match sticks while the triangular number boards were produced on the PC. Each of the posts were placed a carriage length from the previous post. The distance of the posts from the track varied with those at Lydiard St end closer to the track.
Post 13 was situated adjacent to the VR portable buildings that were west of Ballarat B Box. Post 14, 15 and 16 were situated further from the track than post 13.
As there is compression in the section of the layout between Ballarat station and the Armstrong Street Bridge my posts don't have the same number as those in the equivalent position. As I don't have 16 Overland cars its not an issue unless I increase the size of the joint stock fleet.
A Down Horsham pass runs under the Armstrong Street bridge and past posts numbered 14 and 15. |
