VOJF open wagons

VOJF23 in the consist of the Up block Gypsum train to Cowangie.

In addition to VHJA hopper wagons, bogie open wagons were also employed in gypsum traffic. Between 1990 and 1994, approximately 20 bogie open wagons were reclassed to VOJF for dedicated gypsum traffic. These were former VOBX/F or VOCX/F open wagons, mostly plain sided, although their were some with reinforced bracing and at least  a few corrugated sided VOBX converted too.

VOJF30 a ex VOBX plain sided open wagon. Most of the VOJF have been decorated with VR logos even though the wagons never had these logos with the VOJF code.

In traffic the open wagons were intermixed with the hoppers wagons in consists. Typical consists noted were:

The numbers of these wagons were 1 - 4, 6, 9, 10, 13, 14, 16, 17, 19 - 22, 26, 27, 29 - 34. Others may have existed but weren't recorded.

Although these open wagons date from after the period I model, I have included them on the layout, substituting the block of 15 GY and G open wagons used on the 222 Nowingi trains with a replica of the Cowangie gypsum train from the early to mid 1990's.

VOJF28 an ex reinforced plain sided VOBX.

On the layout I run the train to the schedule of 222 Nowingi - North Geelong Goods.  It was scheduled to arrive at Ballarat at 11:10am. Here the train paused until just before midday before continuing its journey to North Geelong. The return working No.227 was scheduled through Ballarat at 5:10am.  Most trains are worked by 2 T class. Occasionally if the train is long, a Y or T class will be added at Ballarat to bank the train up the grade to Warrenheip.
