I recently changed the angle of the station canopy that straddles the four tracks at Ballarat Station. This created a gap between the existing platform verandah and the wall of the station on platform 2 at the Melbourne end of the station building.

DRC43 sits in platform 2 having just arrived on a service from Donald. B72 at platform 1 awaits departure time on a Melbourne pass. |
To close the gap I need to extend the verandah. As the platform is on a curve the verandah had to curve as well so it wouldn't foul the track closest to the platform. The verandah has a cardboard base for strength that is then covered in corregated iron. For roof or top of this base I used thick allumium foil which I scribed with a tool obtained from Brunel Hobbies. For the underside I used Scalescenes corregated iron printed on the computer.

The section added to the verandah, showing the slight curve necessary to clear the adjacent track. The new roof for the platform canopy can be seen in the background. |
|
Two new verandah posts needed to fitted to the extended verandah. The gutters are yet to be fitted. |
The beams and facia board were made from white cardboard, with Evengreen styrene U angle used to produce the gutters.
|
Verandah post made out of a bamboo skewer and styrene tube. |
The posts were made from BBQ skewers cut to the appropriate length with Styrene tube used to produce the base and bracket from which the supports are positioned. The supporting brackets are made from brass strip which was bend around a glue stick tube to get the curved shape.

A finished post with new picket fence for the platform end replicating the missing the picket the and picket on a lean seen in photos from the period modelled. |
The concrete is Scalescenes sheet printed on the computer while the passengers awaiting the next train are an unknown brand of unpainted figures obtained over 30 years ago. There are still a few more details to add to finish this section of station including the signal trust spanning the 4 tracks between the platforms and parcel trolleys.

Completed platform back in place, a ZL guards van sits in dock. |

Close up view of platform roof showing the new angle of the station platform canopy. There is still details such as windows, guttering and roofing to be added to the station. |
