At Ballarat East Loco - 15th May 1983

On the 15th May 1983 the following locos were noted at Ballarat East locomotive Depot.  T320, T323, T324, W243, W248, W260, Y135, Y151, Y154. There was also another W number not recorded, possibly withdrawn and stored.

What's interesting that there is 3 of each class, T, W and Y. All the T class are first series, with class leader T320 being one of those present.

W260 had been based at Ararat prior to being transferred to Ballarat. It was overhauled at Ballarat North Railway workshops and was repainted in a slightly lighter shade of blue.

Y151 rests on one of the roads off the Ballarat East turntable. Y135 and Y154 can be seen in the background across the turntable.

This was the only record that I have found in Newsrail of W248 at Ballarat in 1983. W243 and W260 appear regularly in observations and were often captured in photographs. I assume that these were the W's in the best condition so were therefore used more often. Mark Bau's Victorian Railways website lists that W248 was withdrawn in Sept 1982. Perhaps it was withdrawn and stored at Ballarat East.

A list of W class fleet appeared in the December 1982 issue of Newsrail and indicated that the following W class were at Ballarat.

W242 at Ballarat
W243 at Ballarat
W247 pilot at Ballarat North Workshops
W248 at Ballarat
W250 at Ballarat under repairs
W252 at Ballarat under repairs
W253 at Ballarat workshops under repairs
W257 at Ballarat North Workshops under repair
W260 pilot at Ballarat

I assume from this list that those listed at Ballarat were active on pilot duties, while those listed under repairs would have remained in this state and wouldn't have returned to service. In Mark Bau's listing it indicates that W252 had been withdrawn in Jan 81, W253 in Sept 1982 and W257 in Feb 1982. From this information the unnumbered W must be one of the withdrawn or locos listed as under repairs.
