House on Soldiers Hill

There's only one hill on the layout that has a house on it. It's in the area to the north of the railway line after leaving Ballarat station which is known as Soldiers Hill.

The house is based on one in Doveton Cresent although it's been moved to the west of Armstrong Street. I also altered the layout of the house changing the verandah to the other side to suit the new location and added a garage and vegetable garden.

Soldiers Hill was named during the first residential land sales in 1859and is named in honour of the Colonial forces of Australian 40th Regiment who were station there prior to the battle of the Eureka Rebellion at the Eureka Stockade. The suburb is known for its substantially intact Victorian era architecture, with many of its buildings featuring decorative cast iron ornamentation.

Recently I refreshed the yard replacing some of the garden plants and added some addition details such as bike, ladder and garbage bins against the wall of the garage.

The vegetable garden received some cauliflowers and cabbages. The cauliflowers were made from dried flowers with Wood Scenics foam.

One item that still remains to be added to this and other houses on the layout is the TV antenna. TV antennas were tall in Ballarat during the 1980s (perhaps to receive the TV signal and channels from Melbourne). I haven't found any commercial models that are suitable so will probably need to scratch built these at some later date.
