For traffic from Bunge Flour Mill at Ballarat North, I have recently built 2 of VicRail's 10ft tank shipping containers . These containers were manufactured by Red Fowler Pty Ltd in Newcastle in 1976. The rollingstock register indicates that they had fluidized pneumatic discharge and were used for the carriage of stock food and pellet type stock food and flour.
The containers were built from a SceneMaster 20' tank shipping container. The tank was cut in half and two additional ends manufactured out of styrene sheet. The long side of the container frame was similarly cut in half. The container frame ends were modified by removing the excess bracing and replacing it with bracing reflecting that of the prototype. Two additional ends were manufactured out of styrene strip to match those modified from the kit ends.
Styrene tube, paper and electrical wire were used to produce the piping on the prototype. With a hole punch and styrene tube being used to form the roof hatch.
The containers were carried on 4 wheeled KMQ flat wagons, specially modified with the additional anchors to carry the 10ft containers.
All the containers were sighted at Williamstown on 17th January 1982 with PS 1 and PS 2 on KMQ 79 and PS 3 and PS 4 on KMQ 78. From photo's on the web it also appears that KMQ 80 was fitted with anchors to carry the 10' containers.
I'm yet to build a KMQ with 10' anchors so for the time being the containers will have to sit in the yard at Bunge. On the layout these containers will be used in transporting stock feed and flour from Bunge Flour Mill at Ballarat North.
