942 visited Victoria in August 1983 as a prelude to the introduction of through running of the 930 class between South Australia and Victoria.
942 arrived on the 22nd August 1983 behind C508 on 9130 Jet. It spend some time at South Dynon for inspection before being used for crew training.
942 was returned to South Australia but came back for further trials in October 1983. This included running a Bendigo passenger on the 3rd November 1983 and a period based at Ararat loco depot. It was noted sitting on one of the turntable roads on the 26th and 29th October.
Through running didn't commence until late November when the X/930 combination started to be employed on the Overland. Use of 930s on Jets didn't commence until January 1984.
942 is a modified Lima 44 class. Modifications include adding new horns, exhaust silencers, new pilots, flush glaze windows, horns and air hoses. Staff exchangers were filled in together with multi unit plugs. The loco is painted with Revell SM331 which is a good match for SAR regal red colour. Decals are old BGB decals that I had. The loco is weathered with powders. I didn't have any coloured photos of 942 during it's 2 visits to Victoria in 1983 so used photos from the 930 class feature in the July/August 2019 issue of MotivePower magazine as a guide. I think that I perhaps need to add more black to the roof as the tops 930s were usually covered in soot.
The addition of 942 to the loco fleet will allow me to replicate its trips to and from South Australia and it crew training trials from Ararat during October 1983.
Wow. A lovely old Alco. As I'm from SA I have a soft spot for the 930's. Excellent modeling & photos. Thanks
