In 1970 Islington workshops constructed two CO joint stock guards vans for use on the Overland. Internally they were divided into 3 compartments, with the guards housed in an off centre compartment.
On the layout the Overland is made up of modified Lima Indian Pacific sitting, dining and power cars and Southern Aurora sleeping cars. I have wanted to produce a more accurate van for use on the end of the train replacing the CD van which is standing in for a CO.

I started with a Lima blister pack Indian Pacific passenger car. It doesn't matter that these have crude windows as all that is used is the floor, roof (filed flat), ends and the stainless fluting below window level from the sides. The car is reduced in length, removing the section that was the side doors. Below are photos showing how construction of the van and the almost finished model. I still need to source decals and appropriate roof vents.
The side showing stages of construction, Evergreen styrene board and batten siding was used to replicate the ridges at window level. V groove siding was use to replicate the fluting above the window. |
