Industrial action during May 1983 led to some variety in consist of the Vinelander. On the 4th May an N set was used replacing the usual consist of CE-AZ-MRS-BZ. This was the first working of an N set to Mildura. The set used was N1 consisting of 1BN-2BN-3ACN. They returned to Melbourne the following evening and were photographed passing through Ballarat North in the early morning of Thursday 5th May behind B72.

On Friday 6th May Overland sleepers were used together with 1PCO. They operated with the usual sitting car consist of CE-AZ-MRS-BZ.

During May CD7 hired from ANR was regularly rostered on one of the Vinelander sets replacing the usual wooden CE van.

Further industrial action resulted in a set consisting of 34BE(a/c)-1BG(a/c)-Murray-4AS-5BCE being used on the Down Vinelander on the night the Tuesday 10th May (without sleeping cars or motorail). It was photographed on Thursday 12th May arriving at Ballarat behind X31. The set was used again on the Vinelander that night, this time with the usual sleeping cars and motorail wagon.
