S310 - George Higinbotham

S310 was the first bulldog to be painted in the V/Line orange and grey colour scheme. It emerged from the paint shop in October 1983 and was received much more favourably by the public than the all-over orange scheme on B84.

S310 crosses Doveton Street on a Dimboola pass.

For a while I have wanted to add some models of the early V/Line locomotives to the fleet, and got inspired by the photographic feature Vintage V/Line in the May/June 2019 issue of Motive Power. The article includes a photograph of freshly painted S310 with S315 and S313 awaiting refuelling at South Dynon locomotive depot on Saturday 12th November 1983. This photo is also available on Aaron Davy's VR history facebook page at

I picked up a Lima S at the second hand stall at the Morwell Model Railway Exhibition on the Queens birthday weekend. The loco was in good condition for its age but did have a number of scruff marks on the roof and body. It was also missing the front pilot. Modifications including the fitting of kadee's and flushglaze windows (note that I've misplaced the front cab windows!). The pilot was a spare I had which I added the stripes, air and multi unit hoses to.  I cut strips of green from V/Line decals to use as the background for the name plates. These were stickers (not sure of the brand, maybe VR models?).   I touched up the decals and marks on the paintwork and then lightly weathered the model to reflect a locomotive only in service a few weeks from overhaul using Peter Sweetten's photograph in Motive Power magazine and Jim Leppitt's photo on facebook as a guide.

S310 rests between jobs outside the fuel point at Ballarat East.

During early November 1983 S310 appeared regularly on the Overland in the company of other S class and 3rd series X class (perhaps V/Line were keen to promote the new corporate image). Late in the month through running commenced and regular power on the Overland became 3rd series X with single ended 930 as second unit. On Sunday 4th of December S310 was at Ararat locomotive depot and on 16th December it  partnered with C501 on a Up Jet through Ballarat. By late January 1984, S310 was noted hauling the Up Dimboola pass on 3 consecutive days (23, 24 and 25th).
