In 1978 the original engine shed at Ballarat East was demolished and replaced with a modern 3 road servicing and light repair facility and a 2 road refuelling point. Having previously constructed a partial relief model of the repair facility, I thought that I would build a model of the refuelling facility while off work over the Christmas holidays.

The refuelling facility in August 2005. More recent additions to the facility include the additional handrails on the steps and platforms and the new bunted fuel tank adjacent to the building. Note R700 siting on blocks off the turntable, partially stripped for restoration. |
The building is made from Evergreen styrene and shapes. Board and Batten siding was used to replicate the metal siding, with different sizes of I beam used for the frame and walkways supports. Steps and handrails were salvage from the scrapbox, with L angle for guttering and brass wire for downpipes. The signs were made by resizing photographs in Adobe Photoshop. The building still needs the stand and tank that sit above the shed road that the T is in but this will have to wait until I can get some more styrene I beam.

Side on view of the facility. No.2 road is longer and can accommodate 1 branchline and 1 mainline locomotive. The building is held in place by magnets, allowing it to be removed for cleaning of the track. |
