Passenger cars were regularly transferred to Ballarat North workshops for routine maintenance and upgrades on scheduled passenger trains. Having been transferred to Ballarat in July, a Vinelander sleeper emerged from the workshops in September 1983 internally refurbished (to match the S and Z cars) and externally repainted in V/Line orange and grey.

Although mostly seen through Ballarat on interstate Jet's, C class were occasionally rostered on Ballarat passenger trains.
