Passenger cars were regularly transferred to Ballarat North workshops for routine maintenance and upgrades on scheduled passenger trains. The September 1983 issue of Newsrail reported that a Vinelander sleeper was transferred to Ballarat as leading car on 1230 down Ballarat passenger on Thursday 21st July 1983.
