VHAY Soda Ash Hopper

VHAY were gravity discharge hoppers used for the transport of soda ash from South Australia to glass manufacturers at Spotswood and Dandenong. Built at Ballarat North workshops in 1977 and 1978, There were 10 in the class, numbered 501 - 510. The hoppers wore an ICI logo on their sides. The last VHAY in service was VHAY 507. This was modified and reclassed to VHFX in about 1991.

VHAY 509 is a Railmotor Models kit manufactured as per the instructions. Over last of couple years kits and wagons that I have scratchbuilt during June, July and August have been outshopped without VR logos replicating what occurred in 1983 in the lead up to the launch of V/ Line logo on 21st August 1983.

On the 1st July 1983 the Victorian Railways was officially replaced by the Metropolitan Transport Authority and the State Transport Authority. Pending the establishment of the new logo for the STA (V/Line), wagons repainted at the railway workshops were outshopped in standard colours but without any logo.

From the start of July to mid August 1983, the Ballarat North Workshops outshopped VLCX, VLEX, VOBX and VHGY wagons without the usual large VR logo. The workshops also released a BS car in orange with silver stripes but without the centrally placed VicRail tea-cup logo.  I've replicated this on the layout by including a few freshly painted wagons without logo's either at the workshops or operating in revenue service, adds a little variety to the wagon fleet.

VHAY 509 will be the first wagon this year released to traffic without a VR logo.
